After nearly 50 years in the furniture business, Mattress Outlet of Camden owner seeks successor

CAMDEN, S.C. – After nearly five decades in the furniture and mattress industry, Steve McDonald is preparing for his next chapter and looking for someone ready to take the reins of Mattress Outlet of Camden, his locally owned mattress store on Wylie Street in Camden.

McDonald, who has spent almost 50 years building his career in the furniture business, has owned and operated Mattress Outlet of Camden for the past five years. Now, with his lease approaching renewal and retirement on the horizon, he is hoping to find a buyer interested in continuing the business and building on the relationships it has established with customers throughout the community.

Located at 1023 Wylie Street, Suite E, in a busy Camden shopping center, Mattress Outlet offers customers an alternative to big-box retailers and national furniture chains. “It’s a nice little business, and there’s still a place for locally owned stores like this,” McDonald said. “People like being able to shop local and deal with somebody they know. The mattress business is still profitable, and I’ve enjoyed being able to help people find what they’re looking for.”

For McDonald, the decision to step away comes after a lifetime in an industry he knows well. Having started his career not long after finishing college, he has spent decades learning the business, understanding what customers want, and helping people find the right products for their homes.

Now, he sees an opportunity for someone else to put that experience and established business location to work. Rather than simply closing the doors, McDonald would like to see Mattress Outlet continue operating under new ownership, giving a new entrepreneur the chance to step into an existing retail business with a place in the Camden community.
