Alumna Jessie DuBard ’58 Establishes Scholarship to Assist Education Majors

ROCK HILL, SC – Family support made it possible for Jessie Stanley DuBard ’58 to continue a family tradition and earn a Winthrop degree after the death of her parents. As a way to support her alma mater, she and her husband, Fred DuBard, created the Jessie DuBard Endowed Scholarship to help Winthrop students who come from families similar to her own.

Established in spring 2014, the $50,000 scholarship offers financial assistance to education majors who come from homes where one or both parents are deceased.

DuBard, who grew up in Florence, South Carolina, lost her parents – her mother worked as a nurse and her father was a teacher – before she became a teenager. Her older sister, the late Mary Stanley Burroughs ’47, served as a mother figure for DuBard and her five siblings. DuBard went on to earn her B.A. in sociology at Winthrop. Later, she worked as a teacher in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Florence before her retirement.

DuBard explained that she created the Jessie DuBard Endowed Scholarship to honor her sisters and fellow Winthrop alumnae – Burroughs, the late Rosanne Stanley McClary ’50 and Kitty Stanley Tanner Mescher ’55 – as well as her sisters-in-law, Nancy Nunn ’56, Margaret Pyle ’59, Betty Stanley ’49 and Judith Howard ’63. She also established the scholarship to support Winthrop students who come from single-parent homes or homes with no parents.

“I know how hard it is to make your way with just one parent or no parents. When I was a student, I didn’t know anybody else who was an orphan like I was,” said DuBard. “I want to help students in this situation figure out how to be successful.”
