Alzheimer’s Association honors Campbell children & wife for advocacy in respite care

January 12, 2016

In the first full week of the New Year, the Alzheimer’s Association hosted the first of many “Brain New You” events being held across the state to promote brain health awareness. At the Columbia event, however, there was a special presentation to honor three South Carolina advocates who worked to help raise awareness and funding for respite care services.

Carroll Campbell, III and Mike Campbell both made an appearance at the January 7th event to accept the honor and plaques from Cindy Alewine, Alzheimer’s Association South Carolina Chapter CEO and to also honor their father’s dedication to the issue, even before he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. They both thanked the volunteers, care providers, and staff for the Alzheimer’s Association and were pleased to be part of this organization working for this cause. Mrs. Iris Campbell was also honored and her sons gave her regards.

“We are grateful to the Campbell family for securing funding for our respite care program which has served thousands of families through the years. Governor Campbell’s legacy lives on through this program that continues to make a difference for so many people in our state,” said Ms. Alewine.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a 24 hour hotline to help families who have concerns and can be reached at 1-800-272-3900.
