Participants Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting all Midlands area residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. Two Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place in the Midlands communities of Aiken and Columbia. The Columbia Walk will take place on October 15th at the brand new Spirit Communications Park in Columbia while the Aiken Walk will take place on October 22nd at the Odell Weeks Activity Center in Aiken.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for over 1,050 participants in Columbia and over 500 participants in Aiken who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony.

“Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a wonderful way for the community to come together to show support for families facing Alzheimer’s, honor those we have lost to this disease, and take meaningful steps that will bring us closer to a cure, ” said Cindy Alewine, President/CEO of Alzheimer’s Association South Carolina Chapter.

In addition to the two mile walk at each location, participants will enjoy a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
