Animal resource center answers more then 1200 calls in 2016

March 20, 2017

Charleston Animal Society has received an $11,000 grant from Banfield Foundation to support the Animal Resources Center (help desk) at Charleston Animal Society.  The program is designed to keep pets out of the shelter by helping people find solutions that encourage them to keep their pets.

The Animal Resource Center serves the needs of pet owners throughout Charleston County. The goal of this model program is to develop resources and utilize a case management approach to provide assistance to community pet owners that will help them keep their families together and reduce intake to the shelter.

Pet owners can call in on a hotline, or can use resources placed on the Charleston Animal Society website at:www.CharlestonAnimalSociety.org/get-pet-help.  “We have been very encouraged with the outreach that Banfield has made possible through our Animal Resource Desk,” said Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore. “We are able to give families hope, who thought they had no other option but to give up on their pets.”

Here is a closer look at some of the 1,208 calls handled by the Animal Resource Desk in 2016:

  • The most common inquiry involved Surrendering or Rehoming Pets(128 calls), most of which were prevented through interventions
  • Medical Inquiries were very common (83 calls)
  • Behavioral Concerns were also frequent (70 calls)
  • Other common questions involved lost and found animals, spay-neuter services and concerns about animal cruelty.
  • Solutions involved finding the proper information for callers, getting them medical assistance and at times outreach or financial assistance.
