Anthony Sampedro wins SC Bar scholarship competition

The SC Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) sponsored a video scholarship competition on Instagram* this spring called “My Voice. My Vote.” for South Carolina high school seniors. Blythewood High School senior Anthony Sampedro was selected as the contest winner and will receive the $2,000 scholarship prize next week at his high school’s senior awards ceremony. The contest, hosted by the YLD iCivics Committee, was created to encourage students to examine the political issues surrounding the 2016 election as a first-time voter.
Students submitted an application and created an Instagram* video answering one of the following questions:
- What is the most important issue for the 2016 presidential candidates to address? Why?
- Should there be a limit on how much money presidential candidates can spend on their campaigns? How much and why?
- Do political ads influence your opinions? How?
- Is voting a right or a privilege? Explain.
Each contestant was instructed to post the video to his or her Instagram* account using the hashtags #SCBarYLD and #MyVoiceMyVote. The contest was open to all 12th grade public, private and homeschool students in South Carolina. Students were also required to be enrolled or plan to enroll in a post-secondary institution for the 2016-17 school year.
Entries were evaluated on original thought, substantive answers and creative presentation. Sampedro’s video explained why he believed voting was a right rather than a privilege referencing both the 15th and 19th amendments of the U.S. Constitution.
