Applications now available on-line for supplemental educational services providers

March 17, 2009

COLUMBIA, SC – March 17, 2009  – The South Carolina Department of Education is now accepting on-line applications from agencies and organizations interested in providing supplemental educational services for the 2009-10 school year.

The Department of Education is not procuring services, but will be offering a list of state-approved providers to schools.  Applications to be considered for that listing are due by Friday, April 17, 2009.  Applications are available on the Supplemental Educational Services page on the department’s Web site.

Supplemental educational services are defined as additional academic programs designed to increase student achievement in low-performing schools.  Services may include tutoring, remediation and other educational interventions, but they must be consistent with content and instruction used by the local school district and have to be aligned with the state’s academic standards.

Supplemental services must take place outside of the regular school day. The services must also be high quality, research-based and specifically designed to increase student achievement. Applications may be submitted by non-profit and for-profit agencies, public or private institutions of higher education, faith-based organizations and local educational agencies (school districts).
