GREENVILLE, SC – July 20, 2010 – Faced with deep budget cuts that directly impact the operational performance of local schools, Greenville County Schools has teamed with Michelin for an innovative approach to raising money for basic supplies such as Promethean board lamps, paper products, and cleaning supplies. The school district and Michelin will host a community fund-raising event – Are You Smarter Than A Greenville County Schools Fifth Grader? on Saturday evening, Aug. 21, 2010 at the Carolina First Center.
Local celebrities and community leaders will match wits with some of the brightest fifth graders in the county for a night of family fun. Jeremiah Dew (J Dew), director of fun for the Greenville Drive, will be the master of ceremonies. Underwritten by Michelin and supported by a variety of local businesses, 100 percent of all funds raised will go directly to the schools for operational supplies.
We try to shield our children from the budget cuts we’ve made over the last two years, said Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher, superintendent of Greenville County Schools. But, our schools have seen their budgets for basic supplies such as lamps for classroom computer projection boards, cleaning supplies, paper goods and more slashed by 36 percent. That’s why support from companies like Michelin is so important.
Public school education is the cornerstone of our democracy, said Dick Wilkerson, chairman and president of Michelin North America. Michelin has rolled up our sleeves to make a difference in the quality of public education in Greenville County and beyond through our Michelin Challenge Education initiative, and now, through this fund-raising partnership to ease the impact of severe budget cuts in our local schools. Receiving a world-class education is something that every public school student has earned.
