The Art Cellar to triple in size as Greenville’s art scene grows

North Main Street is getting a new art studio to add to its hip corridor of retail and arts.
The Art Cellar, owned by potter and printmaker Lindsay Louise McPhail, will move from its current location at 123 South Main Street to a newly renovated space in NOMA Flats at 233 North Main Street. The move should be completed by early September.
The Art Cellar will remain underground at its new location, which is one of the hallmark features of the gallery. The renovations to the underground space will preserve the eclectic charm of the location, while upfits, including an electric kiln and a catering kitchen, provide the modern amenities of a fully functioning studio and events space.
At 5,400 square feet, the new North Main location triples the size of the previous location. The expanded space allows additional room for navigable displays of the more than 40 local artists featured at The Art Cellar. In addition, The Art Cellar will continue to display work across a wide variety of mediums, including paintings, photography, ceramics, and handcrafted jewelry.
The renovated space also provides the opportunity to expose the public to local art and artists in new ways. These additional offerings will include working artist studio space for rent, art classes, and other events.
A Greenville native, McPhail has considered herself an artist all her life. McPhail received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Clemson University focusing in printmaking and ceramics, and interned with Artisphere, an annual festival of the arts in Greenville. She went on to pursue graduate studies at the Corcoran College of Art and Design for Art Education in Washington D.C. and also worked at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
After working in the corporate world for a few years, McPhail found an opportunity to dive back full-time into her career as an artist and arts advocate with The Art Cellar in 2014. McPhail also creates functional pottery with a strong emphasis on pattern and surface design. McPhail is active in the Greenville community supporting the arts in many facets, serving on the Arts in Public Places Commission, former chair of PULSE in the ARTS committee with the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, and is active with a group of upstate printmakers called the Contemporary Print Collective at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts.
“I’m excited for the new opportunities the move has for all the artists and the business,” McPhail said. “It’s very rewarding to see a business grow and succeed, but even more so when it greatly impacts the artist community that I’ve always wanted to be a part of.”
