Ashmore to Uncover Revolutionary War Artifacts and Insights at Laurens County Museum

June 4, 2025
The Revolutionary War Lecture Series at the Laurens County Museum will continue on June 7 and June 10, 2025.  On Saturday, June 7, at 10:00 am, Durant Ashmore will reveal the hundreds of Revolutionary War artifacts from three archeological digs at two battle sites in Laurens County.  On Tuesday, June 10, at 7:00 pm, historian and battlefield preservationist Ashmore’s topic will be “What I Have Learned in My Study of the American Revolution”. The public is invited.  The Laurens County Museum is located at 116 South Public Square, Laurens, SC.  Admission is free for Laurens County Museum members and youth.  There is a suggested donation of $5 for others for museum support.
On Saturday, June 7, at 10:00 am, Ashmore will discuss the archeological digs at the important Laurens County Revolutionary War battleground sites of Hammond’s Old Store on Green Plain Road and Fort Lindley on Fort Lindley Road.  The artifacts, which include everything from hand-grenades to forks and buttons and musket balls, all tell the story of the times and the viciousness of mortal combat near present day homes and thoroughfares.  The Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Committee commissioned the archeological digs that confirmed the battles actually occurred in these locations.  These battlefields will be on the fourteen stop Laurens County Revolutionary War Biking and Driving Trail.  The new exhibit, “From Cotton to Craft: The Story of South Carolina Textiles”, will open in the traveling exhibit hall the same day.
On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Ashmore will present a freewheeling discussion about his journey in learning about the Revolutionary War in America and, particularly, the southern colonies – “What I Have Learned in My Studies of the American Revolution”.  In his words, “Local, local, local.  It happened here!“ There was a primitiveness in the pioneer world.  The geography, weaponry, religion, and the clash of cultures involved all had an effect on the road of the Patriots and Loyalists in South Carolina.  Our local history changed world events. There was a revolutionary change in the structure and nature of government.  All will be discussed.
The Laurens County Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.  The exhibit hall is free to tour. For more information, call (864) 681-3678, or visit LaurensCountyMuseum.org.
