August 27, 2014

CAMDEN, SC – Auditions for an exciting Teen Production at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) are fast approaching! William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been chosen as this year’s teen production—but with a modern twist. The play has been updated to take place in coastal Georgia. Auditions will be held on Sunday, September 7 at 4:00 p.m, and Monday, September 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the Wood Auditorium. Auditions are for 6th grade students through 18 years of age. There is no audition fee.

The production is scheduled to run Thursday, October 16 through Sunday, October 19 in the Wood Auditorium at the FAC. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be directed by Jami Steele, Education and Theatre Director for the FAC.

About the play

“The course of true love never did run smooth,” says Lysander and indeed, things get even more complex when you add in mischievous fairies, an arranged marriage and a group of wannabe actors.
Our updated production centers around the upcoming nuptials of Athens Music Group’s owner and CEO, Big Daddy “Duke” Theseus and Hippolyta, rock goddess extraordinaire. Putting a damper on things is Egeus a manager determined to marry country music’s sweetheart and his daughter Hermia to pop idol Demetrius whom she does not love. A healthy dollop of jealousy and fairies, with a side order of eager to please mechanicals make for lots of fun in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, easily one of William Shakespeare’s most accessible comedies.

Available Roles

• The Athens Music Group “Royalty” includes Big Daddy “Duke” Theseus: AMG’s owner and CEO; Hippolyta: a rock goddess engaged to Theseus; Philostrate: Theseus’s assistant; Egeus: Father and Manager of Hermia; Hermia Blue: America’s Country Sweetheart; Helena: Hermia’s personal assistant and best friend since childhood; Lysander Evertrue: Indie rocker/beloved of Hermia and Demetrius: pop star/chosen by Egeus to wed Hermia
• The Mechanicals a.k.a. Regular Joes include Peter Quince: AMG director of maintenance; Nick Bottom: AMG talent promoter; Francis Flute: AMG intern; Robin Starveling: AMG costumer designer; Tom Snout: AMG electronics engineer and Snug: AMG Luthier
• The Fairies include Oberon: King of the Faeries; Titania: Queen of the Faeries; Robin Goodfellow/Puck: servant to Oberon and general mischief-maker; Peaseblossom, Moth, Mustardseed, Cobweb: servants to Titania and various other faeries

Auditions will consist of readings from the script and some improvisation. Please let us know if you have other talents that we might showcase in this production.
