BCSD announces three 2016 Rookie Teacher of the Year Finalists

April 13, 2016

Berkeley County School District’s (BCSD) Rookie Teacher of the Year Committee has narrowed the list of candidates to just three.

Erin Hoskins, Third Grade teacher at Marrington Elementary School; Dorian Palladino, Special Education teacher at St. Stephen Elementary School; and Marissa Waldie, Fourth grade teacher at Cane Bay Elementary are the three finalists.

The Rookie Teacher of the Year Committee consists of a principal, a second year teacher, a member of Teacher Forum, a member of Berkeley County School District’s Office of Leadership Development and Evaluation, a retired teacher and a business partner.

Rookie Teachers of the Year are nominated by their school principal based on the following criteria:

–      Conducting effective instructional planning to meet the needs of all students

–      Providing and facilitating quality instruction

–      Organizing and implementing a culture of learning in the classroom

–      Managing student behavior and classroom events

–      Developing effective relationships with students, parents/guardians and peers

–      Modeling professional demeanor and behavior

–      Serving as an advocate for students and public education as a whole

Each school-level winner completes an application and submits their application, along with a nomination form from the teacher’s principal and a recommendation letter from the teacher’s school-based mentor, to the committee. The committee reviews this information and selects the finalists.

The committee will observe and interview the finalists at the end of April and the District Rookie Teacher of the Year will be announced at the PRIDE Celebration on Monday, May 9, 2016 at Westview Middle School from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Sponsors for the celebration include TE21, Kelly Educational Staffing and Jostens.
