BCSD names Sharon Blackwood 2016 Teacher of the Year

April 18, 2016

Berkeley County School District named Sedgefield Intermediate’s Sharon Blackwood as the 2016 Teacher of the Year Friday, April 15. BCSD honored Blackwood, a third-grade teacher, and 41 school-level Teachers of the Year at the annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast at Trident Technical College, hosted by the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce.

“It is an honor to accept this award on behalf of all of us who love this vocation that we call teaching,” Blackwood said. “No one can accept an award of this magnitude alone because teaching requires a collaborative effort that reflects on our community, our district, our students and Sedgefield Intermediate’s philosophy that, together, we help each child believe that they can succeed.”

The 39th Annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast, sponsored by Trident Technical College, Santee Cooper and the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, celebrates educators nominated by their peers for the outstanding work they are doing in the classroom and in their schools. The other two finalists for BCSD Teacher of the Year were Gina Sawicki of Cane Bay Elementary and Geoffrey Sklar of Goose Creek High.

Blackwood added, “The greatest honor for me is to work with and teach my school children because it is their enthusiasm, inspirations, joys and challenges that mold us into the teachers we are.”
