Agreement is designed to expand availability of specialty services BMH will offer locally

BEAUFORT, SC –  Beaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH) has announced a clinical affiliation with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Terms of the agreement are being defined, according to BMH President and CEO Rick Toomey, but the overall intent is to expand access to care throughout the Lowcountry by creating a stronger relationship with the state’s only academic medical center.

“We as an organization – and many of our physicians – have had very strong relationships with the leadership and many of the specialists at MUSC Health for years,” Mr. Toomey said.  “We consider this affiliation to be a more formal agreement that both encompasses and expands upon the work we have been doing together for many years.”

MUSC Health, the clinical enterprise of the Medical University of South Carolina, is the state’s most nationally recognized health system and serves as the Lowcountry’s only Level One Trauma Center, Children’s Hospital and is one of only 68 National Cancer Institutes (NCI)-designated cancer centers in the country.

In collaboration with local care providers, MUSC Health develops and implements innovative models of care delivery with the common goal of enhancing the health of all South Carolinians. Annually, thousands of Beaufort County residents benefit from innovative, integrated care provided by local care givers and MUSC Health.

“Today’s dynamic health care environment calls for new and different collaborations and clinical integrations to deliver the best care at the best location for the patient,” said Dr. Patrick J. Cawley, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, MUSC Health Medical Center. “Sometimes that means care delivered in the local community close to home and family, and other times the best outcome may require access to the highly specialized services delivered by MUSC Health.”

“Our goal is to provide the best care to our patients and our community in our local setting,” Mr. Toomey said. “As we work over the next several months to define the most relevant opportunities to continue to enhance services, we will look forward to sharing that information with the entire community.”
