Behind the Scenes at 1310 Lady St./the Keenan Bldg

February 26, 2019

Go behind the scenes with Historic Columbia and explore one of downtown’s iconic landmarks and its peculiar history, as well as its future plans.

Part of the 1310 Lady Street redevelopment project, The Keenan Building was built as a six-story structure in 1921 and became a complex in 1951, when a ten-story portion was added on. It was further expanded in the 1980s with a three-story addition. This complex has been home to many organizations and business, from the Masons to Merrill Lynch.

This complex structure will soon be transformed into 109 apartments will a spectacular view of Main Street. The project will restore the building to its original 1930s façade and return to brick and limestone decorative details that were previously covered.

“It deserves to have some life brought back to it,” said Julie Tuttle of Styx Co., which owns the building. “We want to recognize the history of it and (restore) the architectural details that are still there.”

See for yourself by registering for our next behind-the-scenes tour. This event will take place on Thursday, February 28 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Historic Columbia members and $50 for non-members. About Historic Columbia

In November 1961, a small group of individuals intent on saving the Ainsley Hall House from demolition officially incorporated as the Historic Columbia Foundation. Over the next five decades the organization, which was founded on the premise of preservation and education, would take on the stewardship of seven historic properties in Richland County. Today, the organization serves as a model for local preservation efforts and interpretation of local history.
