April 14, 2026

A Simpsonville student is being recognized at the state level for using her artistic talents to promote environmental stewardship.

PalmettoPride announced the finalists for the 2026 Governor’s Art Contest on Litter Prevention at the South Carolina Statehouse, and among those honored was Madelynn Pitts, a fifth-grade student at Bell’s Crossing Elementary School in Simpsonville.

Madelynn’s artwork was selected as a finalist in the annual statewide competition, which invites elementary students across South Carolina to illustrate the theme, “Litter Trashes Everyone.”

Through their artwork, students are encouraged to inspire residents of all ages to appreciate South Carolina’s natural beauty and help keep the state’s roads, waterways, and landscapes litter-free.

Madelynn’s teacher, Dr. Wonda Hillard, was also recognized for helping foster creativity and environmental awareness in the classroom.

As part of the finalist recognition, South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette joined PalmettoPride in honoring this year’s student artists for their work and commitment to promoting litter prevention through art.

The Governor’s Art Contest on Litter Prevention is hosted annually by PalmettoPride to encourage young South Carolinians to think creatively about the importance of protecting and preserving the communities and natural resources around them.
