Benedict College announces its 2016 Black History Month Events

COLUMBIA, SC – Benedict College will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events and activities highlighting and honoring the role and impact of African Americans throughout this country’s history. A full schedule of lectures, musical events, workshops, and programs that focus on the culture of history of the African-American community is scheduled throughout the month of February. Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Black History Month is a time set aside to reflect on the history and legacy of African Americans in the United States. In the course of the last three hundred plus years, African Americans have made countless contributions to the fabric of this nation. Their toil, talent, brilliance, and courage are inspiring to current and future generations.

HARAMBEE FESTIVAL COMMUNITY CHOIR CONCERT AND THE SENSATIONAL NIGHTINGALES — FEBRUARY 28, 2016
The Invitation: You are invited to sing on what will be one of the most amazing choirs in South Carolina, featuring Minister Darryl Izzard as resident clinician. Some of the family members and survivors of those murdered at Emanuel AME Church come to Antisdel Chapel to tell their inspired stories of unwavering “faith” and love in the aftermath of unconscionable pain and suffering. PANEL DISCUSSION
Students and the public are exposed to a panel discussion on the roles of different religions and how they shape the leadership experience of students. This discussion is followed up with a presentation on theological interpretations from the African American experience.
Topic: “Historical Significance vs. 21st Century Relevance: Exploring the significance and relevance of faith and religion in the leadership experience of HBCU students.”
This panel presentation will feature religious leaders with diverse perspectives and backgrounds; exploring the modern-day implication and applicability of faith and religion in the leadership experience of college students. The Confederate Flag was removed from the grounds of the South Carolina State House after years of conflict and struggle. South Carolina House District 74 Representative Todd Rutherford explains what the removal of the Confederate flag means as he stands on the shoulders of many valiant men and women who were instrumental in this process. He will speak on what’s next from his perspective as well as reconciliation and a way forward for all South Carolinians and America.

The 29th Annual Benedict College Black History Teleconference President’s Dinner will be held at the Embassy
Suites Hotel, 200 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, SC. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and dinner starts at 7:00 p.m.

The 29th Annual Benedict College Black History Teleconference will be held live on the campus of Benedict College at 10:30 a.m. in the David H. Swinton Campus Center. This year commemorates the national theme “Hallowed Grounds: Sites of the African American Memory.” The filming is open to the public, but attendees must be seated by 10:15 a.m. The program will be televised on the South Carolina Educational Television network on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.

GLOBAL VILLAGE AT BENEDICT COLLEGE
The Office of International Programs (OIP) in conjunction with the International Students Association (ISA) will sponsor the 2016 Global Village at Benedict College on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 from 2-5 p.m. in Ballrooms A & B of the David H. Swinton Campus Center. The Global Village experience is designed to celebrate the ethnic, cultural, linguistic and geographic diversity, and internationalization of students, faculty and staff unique to Benedict College.
This year, international students are challenged to create innovative displays and interactive mediums to showcase and educate attendees about their respective countries of origin, and prizes will be awarded for the best 1st, 2nd and 3rd place displays. The global village will also feature music, dance, fashion, artifacts and cuisine from around the world, and attendees will witness cross-cultural dialogue taking place in multiple languages such as English, Spanish, French, Swahili, Dutch, Portuguese, Amharic, Nepali, Arabic, and Mandarin just to name a few, which reflects the multi-lingual and multi-ethnic environment at Benedict College. THE LATE DR. LISTERVELT MIDDLETON LECTURE SERIES
The Kemetic Institute for Health and Human Development sponsors the Listervelt Middleton Lecture Series entitled Messengers of Truth: “Champions of Deep Thought Giving Voice to the People.” This lecture Series honors the 20th anniversary of the transitioning of Dr Listervelt Middleton.
Dr. Middleton, a Benedict College graduate and honorary degree recipient, was one of the foremost scholars who researched and interpreted African history and culture as well as the history of Africans in America. Take a workshop in resume writing and essay writing for graduate school personal statement. Learn techniques and rules of resume writing; use a formula for an employment application letter; and learn how to continue to assess and revise employment application writing for career goals and skills enhancement.
Each personal statement for graduate school must have an organizing “hook.” Become involved in a variety of activities dealing with portraying a vivid and honest portrayal of the essay writer. THE TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL HARAMBEE FESTIVAL
Welcomes the national and internationally known traditional gospel artists – The Sensational Nightingales whose songs include “I Want to be at the Meeting”, “See You in the Rapture”, “There’s a Leak in this Old Building”, “Morning Train”, “Somewhere Listening for My Name” and many, many more. The Harambee Festival Community Choir will sing with the Sensational Nightingales at the Harambee Festival on Saturday and at the concert on Sunday.
The Harambee Festival is one of the largest College-sponsored in the nation. It is an annual event for the entire family that has plenty of food, music, fun, art, and those hard-to-find merchandise items in the Shopping Village. There is a separate Food Village.
The KIJIJI Children’s Village will feature scientific experiments, virtual classrooms, educational enrichment, and dance lessons. Other events include bounce houses outside for the children.
Live stage performances are scheduled throughout the day to include the national award winning Benedict College Gospel Choir, the Harambee Festival Community Choir, and a special appearance by the Harambee Festival Community Choir, various other jazz, R&B, gospel choirs, praise dancers, international performance, and much more.
