Benedict College Service-Learning and Leadership Development Hosts 5th Annual Strengthening Our Neighborhood Community Day

August 12, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – The Benedict College Service-Learning and Leadership Development Program will host its 5th Annual Strengthening Our Neighborhood Community Day event on Saturday, August 15, 2015. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. and will be held at the Charlie W. Johnson Football Stadium, located between Read Street and Two Notch Road in Columbia, South Carolina. This will be a day for families to come out and enjoy face painting, games, food and fun while getting to know their neighbors and learning more about services available in the Columbia area.

In preparation for our K-12 students returning to school, we will be hosting a car wash for school supplies drive. In collaboration with the Freshman Institute, our incoming freshman class will be introduced to the community and the College’s mission of service by engaging in one of the largest car washes Columbia has seen. All proceeds and school supplies collected from this car wash will be donated to Richland County School District One. Last year at the Community Day event, we provided supplies for nearly 500 children. We are asking donors to purchase and donate new, unopened school supplies to support this effort. Donors have the opportunity to purchase essential school supplies to benefit local school children (items such as back packs, pens, pencils, notebooks, glue and folders, etc.). In return for the generosity of donors, students will be ready to provide an exterior cleaning to the personal vehicles of contributors.

Benedict College students are required to engage in service-learning activities designed to affect change and build leadership through academic-based opportunities that enhance students’ intellectual growth, civic responsibility, and career exploration. Last year, students engaging in service provided over 43,395 hours to the community. This service activity will kick off the 2015-2016 academic year of service to the community. Please come out to show your support.
