Bestselling author Frank to speak at law school commencement

April 2, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank will serve as commencement speaker on May 10 for the Charleston School of Law, the school announced.

“We are incredibly honored to have a New York Times bestselling author who writes so beautifully about the Lowcountry to address our graduates this year,” Dean Andy Abrams said today.  “Her novels entertain readers, but also speak deeply about societal problems encountered every day by attorneys across the nation.  We look forward to her remarks this May.”

Frank, who grew up in Sullivan’s Island and attended Bishop England High School, will receive an honorary degree during commencement, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. May 10 at McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel.

Frank, a graduate of The Fashion Institute of America, had a career in the apparel industry before retiring in 1985 to raise a family.  Her first novel, Sullivan’s Island (2000), debuted in ninth place on The New York Times bestseller list.  It went back to press more than 25 times. Each of her other  novels made the Times bestseller list.  Her 16th novel, All the Single Ladies, is scheduled for publication in June.

Ms. Frank, who has served on numerous Charleston-area and metro New York City nonprofit boards, divides her time between the Lowcountry and New Jersey.  She and her husband have two adult children.
