A Conversation with Beth De Santis, CEO, SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

The South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy has begun an exciting chapter in its leadership with the addition of new CEO, Beth De Santis.  No stranger to teen pregnancy prevention, De Santis comes to the SC Campaign with a host of experience as former director of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau at the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).  Deeply invested in the well-being of South Carolina’s youth, transitioning into the role of CEO has proven to be a natural next step for De Santis as she has dedicated much of her life to helping decrease the state’s teen birth rate.

De Santis comes to the organization during a time of great success in South Carolina.  The state has seen a 61% decline in teen births since its peak in 1991 and has experienced tremendous strides in access to contraception and community mobilization surrounding the issue.  Although the state has made impressive improvements, there is still work to be done as South Carolina has the 13th highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation.  By working with committed community organizations across the state, the goal of the SC Campaign is to continue to work towards greater declines and a brighter future for South Carolina’s youth.
