Big Changes Coming for Southwest and United Travelers
May 28, 2025Southwest Airlines is undergoing significant policy changes that will impact travelers in 2025 and beyond. The airline is ending its long-standing “Bags Fly Free” policy and transitioning from open seating to assigned seating. Meanwhile, United Airlines is updating its check-in time requirements.
Southwest Airlines Updates
1. End of “Bags Fly Free”
Effective May 28, 2025, Southwest Airlines will no longer offer two free checked bags for all passengers. New baggage fees will apply to flights booked on or after this date:
-
$35 for the first checked bag
-
$45 for the second checked bag
Who still gets free bags:
-
Business Select fare customers and Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members: 2 free checked bags
-
A-List members and Southwest credit card holders: 1 free checked bag
-
Up to eight companions on the same reservation also qualify for these baggage perks
2. Assigned Seating Replaces Open Seating
Southwest will phase out its open seating policy in favor of assigned seating beginning in early 2026. The new fare categories will be:
-
Basic Fare: Random seat assignment unless you pay to choose
-
Choice Fares: Seat selection included
-
Premium Seating Options: Seats with extra legroom, located at the front and in exit rows
The airline will retrofit its fleet, with the first updated aircraft expected to fly by the end of 2025.
United Airlines Check-In Policy Changes
Beginning June 3, 2025, United Airlines will require domestic passengers to check in at least 45 minutes before departure, regardless of whether they are checking bags. Previously, the window was 30 minutes for travelers with carry-ons only.
Reminders:
-
International check-in deadline remains 60 minutes before departure
-
Online, app, and airport check-in remains available starting 24 hours before your flight
Bottom Line:
These airline changes mark a shift toward increased fees and more structured boarding processes. Travelers should review new policies before booking to avoid surprises and plan ahead for a smoother airport experience.
