BlocHaven partners with American Cancer Society on Climb to Conquer Cancer event
June 5, 2023BlocHaven, one of the largest climbing gyms on the East Coast located in the historic Judson Mill District, is pleased to announce it is partnering with the American Cancer Society for its “Climb to Conquer Cancer” fundraising event in support of the nonprofit’s mission to free the world from cancer.
Timed with BlocHaven’s annual BlocParty, an event celebrating the anniversary of the rock-climbing gym’s opening, the climb-a-thon will take place on June 10 from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. with the drop-in climbing portion from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to register for “Climb for the Cure” and attempt to top a certain number of climbs based on their chosen category and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Awards for the top fundraiser will be presented at 5:30 p.m.
In January of 2023, Doug Johnson, owner of BlocHaven, received his own cancer diagnosis and has been inspired by the support he’s received from the Upstate and surrounding rock-climbing communities.
“Our community reached out to support me, and I learned a lot about this and other forms of cancer through the process,” said Doug Johnson. “That’s the true definition of community – a group that cares for each other and shares good times and bad with each other.”
The American Cancer Society, which recognizes that a cancer diagnosis can be the scariest of times for patients, provides a 24/7/365 live helpline where patients and their caregivers can get answers and find out about other supportive programs they can use throughout treatment.
BlocHaven’s 800,000-square-foot space opened in June of 2021 and truly embraces community. BlocHaven is open to those who have been climbing for years or those who have only watched climbing in the Olympic Games and want to be a part of the growth of the sport globally.
