Blue Hose Slugger Joel Dragoo Continuing His Baseball Journey in the Phillies System

June 17, 2025
Former Presbyterian College standout Joel Dragoo is making the most of his opportunity in professional baseball, now competing for the Clearwater Threshers, the Single-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Dragoo’s journey to pro ball wasn’t conventional, but it’s been defined by steady growth, perseverance, and a commitment to staying true to himself. After his freshman season at PC, he spent the summer training and playing summer ball at Inspiration Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

He followed that with a strong sophomore year, then went on to play in the Appalachian League for the Greenville Flyboys. After another standout season as a junior in 2024, one that earned him Big South Player of the Year honors, Dragoo graduated from PC and attended the MLB Draft Combine in Arizona. A few weeks later, he was selected 222nd overall in the seventh round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

The start of his professional career came with a challenge. On the first day of spring training, Dragoo tore his hamstring. He was initially assigned to High-A Jersey Shore, but the injury sent him to Clearwater, Florida for rehab. As he worked his way back, he was placed on the active roster for the Clearwater Threshers.

Now healthy and competing in the Florida State League, Dragoo is continuing to represent Presbyterian College with pride. His path may have taken a few turns, but the tools, work ethic, and belief that got him drafted are still front and center as he begins the next chapter of his baseball journey.

“Every day I’m just trying to get better and enjoy the moment,” Dragoo added. “It’s been a long road to get here, but I’m exactly where I want to be.”

So far in his time with Clearwater, Dragoo has shown flashes of the same offensive ability that made him one of the top hitters in the Big South. In his debut season in 2024, he batted .319 over 15 games, collecting 15 hits, 6 doubles, and 12 RBIs while posting an impressive .508 on-base percentage. Through 42 games in 2025, he has added 28 hits, 7 doubles, 24 walks, and 12 more RBIs, continuing to find ways to contribute and compete at the plate.

Dragoo credits a lot of his success to his time playing baseball at Presbyterian College.

“Presbyterian was the best decision I could have made,” Dragoo said. “Coach Pollock and the staff believed in me and let me be myself. They helped me grow as a player and as a person, and I’ll always be grateful for that.”

Elton Pollock and Joel Dragoo“Joel brought a toughness to our team that was contagious,” said Presbyterian head coach Elton Pollock. “He had a professional mindset from day one and carried himself with confidence and grit. It’s been great to watch him continue that at the next level with the Phillies.”
