Blythewood High School student among college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship winners

July 20, 2020

Blythewood High School graduate McLean T. Brown joins the list of Richland Two students receiving a College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced over 650 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join more than 3,300 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in June. This brings the total number of Richland Two students receiving scholarships to eight.

Officials of each sponsor college select their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. McLean plans to attend the University of South Carolina and possibly pursue a career in Astrophysics. He is among the final group of National Merit winners.

Other winners in Richland Two who were announced last month are Spring Valley High School graduates Ahad Ashraf Chattha, Jacob L. Ho, Connor P. Myrick, Abhijith B. Nair, Sachet Urs, Amal Verma, and Luke F. Zhang.

Over 1.5 million juniors in approximately 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
