The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation announced its inaugural Sustainability Lunch and Learn presented by Furman University and The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities. The event will take place on Friday, June 11th during the 2021 BMW Charity Pro-Am, which marks the tournament’s 20th year of play.

Additional sponsors of the event include Wilmington-based Atlantic Packaging, which operates a large manufacturing and distribution center in Greenville, and Lockhart Power Company, which has served the Upstate since 1912. Ball Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of recyclable metal beverage and food containers, is also sponsoring the event.

“We are pleased to launch this exciting event and have the support of Furman University, Atlantic Packaging, Lockhart Power Company and Ball Corporation, all of whom share our passion for reducing waste and making our world a better place for future generations,” said Bob Nitto, president of South Carolina Charities, Inc. “This event is a strategic part of the BMW Charity Pro-Am’s mission to make our tournament as sustainable as possible while inspiring other sporting events across the country to do the same.”

The Sustainability Lunch and Learn will feature keynotes from Furman University Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Ken Peterson as well as Shi Institute Executive Director Wes Dripps. Furman University has been an avid supporter of sustainability initiatives through its Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities, a regionally-focused institute that promotes human flourishing and sustainability through education, research and leadership.

“Furman University and the Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities are thrilled to be part of the BMW Charity Pro-Am’s inaugural Sustainability Lunch and Learn,” said Furman University President Elizabeth Davis. “We applaud the tournament’s commitment to sustainability and look forward to seeing the impact they have in our community, in the world of golf and beyond.”

Within the Upstate, Atlantic Packaging serves clients in the automotive, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and consumer goods sectors with services like stretch wrapping, shrink packaging, protective packaging, printing, graphics, and equipment servicing and installation. Atlantic Packaging’s Sustainability Program is committed to sustainable packaging throughout the entire supply chain. Led by company President Wes Carter, the initiative is centered around a sustainability leadership council, climate pledge, and goals for fostering a better planet. Atlantic recently launched A New Earth Project, a global collaboration with the professional surfing community to raise awareness and promote solutions to plastic pollution. The documentary series, airing later this summer, will feature breakthroughs and solutions in circularity for the packaging supply chain.
