May 24, 2022

The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX announced the addition of former NFL wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald Jr. and retired MLB pitcher José Alvarez to its 2022 celebrity lineup. Fitzgerald and Alvarez join the additional twenty-four professional athletes, actors, golf influencers, and musicians playing in this year’s tournament taking place June 9-12 at Thornblade Club in Greer and The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg.

Fitzgerald played seventeen seasons in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals after playing college football at University of Pittsburgh. He was the third overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and is widely considered by fans, coaches, and peers to be one of the greatest receivers in NFL history. Fitzgerald was selected for the Pro Bowl eleven times and named First-team All-Pro in 2008 and Second-team All-Pro in 2009 and 2011. He is ranked second overall in NFL career receiving yards, second in career receptions, and sixth in receiving touchdowns.

Alvarez played four seasons in the MLB pitching for the Atlanta Braves and earned the team’s Most Outstanding Pitcher Award in 1988. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he played at the collegiate level. Alvarez and his family reside in Greenville.

“We are excited to expand our celebrity roster with these two great additions,” said Max Metcalf, manager of government and community relations at BMW Manufacturing and secretary/treasurer of South Carolina Charities, Inc. “As a newcomer to the tournament, Larry will bring great excitement to both courses as one of the greatest NFL players of all-time. We are also pleased to have José join us for another year; he continues to be a great supporter of our event and a fan favorite.”

During tournament week, Alvarez will host a “Shoot-out with the Pros” led by former professional golfer Kyle Thompson and benefitting FCA Greenville. The event will take place Wednesday, June 8th at 3’s Greenville Golf & Grill with a 9:00am shotgun start. Teams, playing spots, and sponsorships are available for purchase here. Each team will be made up of two players and one Korn Ferry Tour Pro.

This year also marks the BMW Charity Pro-Am’s return to Spartanburg at The Carolina Country Club. The tournament will host a special Spartanburg Evening Event: A Night with The Marshall Tucker Band presented by The Johnson Group. This event will take place Tuesday, June 7th at 7:30pm on Morgan Square in Spartanburg. The concert is free to attend, and VIP tickets with special access to Delaney’s Irish Pub are available for purchase via the tournament website.
