February 4, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Bob Coble, a Member (partner) in Nexsen Pruet’s Columbia office, has been honored with the 2015 Martin Luther King Social Justice Award for community service by the University of South Carolina.

The award is given annually to a USC student, faculty member, and community leader who demonstrate the philosophies of Dr. King through service, social justice, or racial reconciliation.

“I’m both honored and humbled by this award,” said Coble, who served as mayor of Columbia for 20 years. “The commitment to social justice has been a foundation of my life, my career, and my years in public office. And while I deeply appreciate this acknowledgement, I realize the fight for social justice is ongoing and I will continue to wage it at every opportunity.”

Coble’s impact on Columbia and the Midlands has been considerable, and his contributions have been widely recognized:

    • Ambassador of the Year by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce
    • Knowledge Economist Award from the South Carolina Research Authority
    • John W. “Tootie” Williams Distinguished Service Award from the Richland County Bar Association for “distinguished and meritorious service to the legal profession or to the public in professional related activities”

He is also a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor, and the USC Compleat Lawyer Platinum Award, which is given to graduates of the USC School of Law who have made “significant contributions to the legal profession and exemplify the highest standards of professional competence, ethics and integrity.”

Additionally, he serves as chairman of the Columbia World Affairs Council and is a member of the board of the Columbia Urban League.
