Bobbitt Design Build Selected for Whitney Fire Department Addition

October 18, 2012

SPARTANBURG, SC – October 15, 2012 – Bobbitt Design Build will provide the new one-story addition for Whitney Fire Department located on Bryan Road. The 7,571-square-foot addition will make the overall station approximately 13,500 square feet in size.

The new building is designed with sweeping horizontal curves to project a clean modern image and tie into the local surroundings (the neighboring school has the same curved elements). The design proposes to introduce a new brick façade to the entire structure with accent brick to highlight the curves of the new station.

The existing apparatus building will be capped with a new cornice clad in the same stucco material as the accent band in the new building providing a new appearance for the station in its entirety. Altogether, this addition and the work complete within the existing apparatus bays will create a new modern station designed to effectively accommodate full-time staffing and expanded operations. By providing a new public parking area, a clear separation of the public/private areas will give the station the ability to restrict and/or control access to the areas where firefighters perform their daily functions providing a level of safety for both the public and the firefighters.

The building site is narrow and deep providing somewhat of a challenge with location and layout of the new station. By keeping the apparatus bays intact, Bobbitt was able to effectively locate the addition to minimize the impact on the site. Architrave, Inc. provided the building design, and the project was designed with these and other limitations in mind.

Bobbitt will provide the size and number of rooms needed to run our department including sleeping quarters for more than 10 volunteers, a large dining area and kitchen, specific offices for all paid personnel, and gender-specific areas for female volunteers, said Chief Shawn Petras.

The existing administrative area is not adequate to support the additional functions of the department, and will be completely demolished to make way for the new administrative, training, living, and sleeping areas.

Construction is anticipated to begin in November.
