Bobbitt to Donate Construction Services for Homeless Families

September 9, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Bobbitt Design Build is combining forces with The Boudreaux Group to build a new community building for Family Shelter, the Midland’s only emergency shelter for homeless parents and children, located at 2411 Two Notch Road in Columbia. The Bobbitt team will donate its time and expertise at cost to the organization.

The 3,460-square-foot space is being funded by Shandon United Methodist Church and will provide the resident families with a fully-equipped kitchen, dining area, meeting space, family room, den, laundry facility and security office. In addition to upgrading the cooking and dining space, the new building will increase capacity for parent education classes, adult and youth enrichment activities, and basic indoor gathering space for families.

“The donation from Shandon United Methodist Church to upgrade our facility was truly a remarkable gift for us and the clients we serve,” says Rebecca Jacobson, Family Shelter executive director. “When Bobbitt stepped up and offered to do the construction work and forgo their profit from the project, it expanded the scope of what we could build. Bobbitt’s leadership and generosity will go a long way toward helping us offer more program services and improve the quality of life for the homeless families who need our shelter.”

In previous years, Bobbitt worked with Family Shelter to evaluate the condition and needs of its existing structure, and the timing all came together this year for the new building.

“This project is vital to helping Family Shelter fulfill its mission to help residents build life skills needed in order to regain independence,” says Ben Wilson, president of Bobbitt Design Build LLC. “We’re looking forward to using our talents to give back to the community and this worthy local organization.”

Wilson said that many other subcontractors and suppliers in the Midlands area have also agreed to provide support to the project.

Construction will begin in January 2015.
