Bon Secours launches pain management program

January 31, 2024

Bon Secours St. Francis wants to put an end to your pain, so the health system is launching a pain management program to help patients who suffer from all types of pain affecting the head, neck, back, knees, and other areas.

“Pain has a huge influence on a patient’s quality of life. It can affect their mood, behavior, condition, social life, as well as their home and work life,” said Dr. Daniel Atkinson, Bon Secours St. Francis’ newest pain management physician.

The addition of pain management to the health system’s current medical specialties means patients across the Upstate will now have access to critical treatment options that provide relief, especially for those suffering from chronic pain.

“I like to take a whole person approach to healing. That means taking the time necessary to evaluate your health and pinpoint the precise cause of your pain so we can get you a treatment plan that targets your specific needs and provides optimal relief.”

Dr. Atkinson’s education includes a fellowship in pain management at the University of Augusta in Georgia and a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he also received his medical degree. Most recently, he was treating patients at Prisma Health. His exceptional qualifications also include two board certifications from the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Interventional Pain.

“He takes a multidisciplinary approach, helping each patient find optimal relief from their pain by incorporating the medical, interventional, and complementary therapies that meet their unique needs,” said Wayne Fraleigh, chief operating officer of the Bon Secours Medical Group. “His compassionate and expert care has earned numerous accolades, and that’s why we’re so excited to have him joining our team and bringing this exceptional service to the Upstate community.”

Dr. Atkinson’s specializes in chronic pain with the goal to target his patients’ pain and help manage or alleviate it so they can get back to their lives. He’s able to provide care for a wide variety of spine conditions including osteoporosis, sciatica, scoliosis, etc. via minimally invasive procedures, decompressions, nerve blocks, injections and more.
