Bon Secours receives comprehensive Stroke Center designation

January 26, 2020

The Bon Secours St. Francis Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center have achieved the Comprehensive Stroke Center designation.

Offered by the Joint Commission, in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, this is the highest level of certification for hospitals with specific abilities to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. Bon Secours is now one of only five hospitals in South Carolina to earn the designation.

“I am most proud of this accomplishment because it now ensures that the upstate region of South Carolina has a choice as to where they can go to receive care for their cerebrovascular disease,” said Dr. Sharon Webb, Director of Cerebrovascular, Endovascular & Neurocritical Care.

The CSC designation signifies that Bon Secours provides the highest level of care for ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, including performing mechanic thrombectomies and treating ruptured or unruptured aneurysms and AVMs.

“It shows our dedication to the community, to the state, and to our patients to give the absolute best stroke care possible,” said Webb.

Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability and the third leading cause of death in the United States. Knowing the early warning signs and getting care quickly can greatly improve a person’s chance at a full recovery. The best way to remember this is to remember to BE FAST:

B – Balance

E – Abnormal eye movements

F – Facial drooping

A – Arm weakness

S – Speech difficulty

T – Time to call 911

If you notice these signs in someone help them get medical care as fast as possible. With how important stroke treatment is we are glad Bon Secours is at the forefront providing good help to those in need.
