Bourbon transforms for Tiki week January 25th

COLUMBIA, SC – On Sunday, January 25th, immediately following brunch service, for one week, the whiskey bar and Cajun-Creole kitchen restaurant, Bourbon, will transform itself into Bourbon Oasis, a tiki-themed bar. Tiki cocktails and island-inspired cuisine will replace the usual food and cocktail menu, and with grass-thatch, tiki masks, surf boards and bamboo, the restaurant will also LOOK the part. The cocktail list will change to Mai Thais, Zombies, Navy Grogs, Painkillers and many more from the pantheon of classic tiki cocktails. Chef Gordon Langston will transform the menu to reflect a taste of the islands with pu-pu platters, roasted pork, sweet and sour shrimp, jerk chicken with banana curry and much more.

“Two things sparked my desire to do Tiki Week. First, while researching cocktail culture to open Bourbon, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the ‘how, who, when, why, where’ of the tiki bar phenomenon that began in the ‘30s with Don the Beachcomber and “Trader Vic” Bergeron. The secretive drink recipes, the larger-than-life personalities, the island decor…it’s all just too much to not become engrossed in. Second, the drinks, when made properly, are absolutely stunning. They are NOT the sickly sweet, strangely colored concoctions that people have become accustomed to because of bad bartenders or misinformed recipe books. Mainly, the reason I want to do it, AND make it an annual event, is it gives us the ability to explore and celebrate an amazing style of the cocktail experience that we normally wouldn’t. And who knows? If it’s a big hit, we may open a dedicated tiki bar” said Kristian Niemi owner of Bourbon.

Bourbon is a whiskey bar and Cajun-Creole restaurant located just steps from the South Carolina State Capitol building at 1214 Main Street in the historic Brennen Building (1869). We specialize in bourbon, whiskey, craft cocktails and the flavors of the Louisiana Bayou.

Tiki Week will begin the evening of January 25th with a private, invite-only event, and will last through the week until Sunday the 31st.
