BreastFest Greenville supports breast cancer patients at GHS with event at Quest Brewing Company

August 20, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC — Breast cancer patient support organization, The Tyanna Foundation will hold BreastFest, its flagship fundraising event, for the first time in South Carolina, on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Quest Brewing Company (55 Airview Drive) from 3pm – 8pm.

Tickets go on sale in August and will range from $40 in advance to $60 at the door. The cost includes admission, craft beer, wine and soft drinks, food and live music. The family-friendly event also will have activities just for kids, such as face painting, crafts and games.

The event will benefit the Greenville Health System and will help to provide free breast screenings to women.  According to James Kaltenbach, director of cancer services for the GHS Cancer Institute, “In the past few years, the GHS free screening program has screened 400 women each year. Just recently, five patients with breast cancer were identified in a 30-day timeframe. Screening is important for all. A patient needing help often qualifies for assistance to cover treatment, and catching cancer early often lowers the overall cost of treatment and gives the patient the best chance to be cured. Well over 90% of women can survive breast cancer caught in state 0 or 1 while the survival rate at state 4 lowers to 20%. Your gift to BreastFest will help cover the cost of screening and diagnosing women in our community.”

According to BreastFest Greenville Chair Cate Tyson, “BreastFest is unlike other cancer-related fundraisers for a number of reasons. The Tyanna Foundation is all-volunteer run, for example, so after expenses, all funds raised go directly to the chosen local charity.”

Tyson also said planners want the event to have a very local flavor. “We are booking Greenville-based musicians, recruiting local catering companies and restaurants for the food, and of course, Quest will serve their own locally-brewed craft beer,  “Plus the funds raised stay local, helping patients and their families right here in the Upstate,” said Tyson.

Medical professionals from GHS will be there to educate attendees about the importance of yearly mammograms and how to conduct a proper self-breast exam.

The Tyanna Foundation’s namesake, Tyanna O’Brien, had a passion for life and never took herself too seriously,” according to Tyson, “and her daughters wanted to remember and honor their mother in that regard. So we like to have fun with the fact that we’re talking about breasts. At an event in Baltimore, beer was served in 12-oz cups, labeled ‘C Cups,’ and 20-oz cups labeled ‘D Cups.’ We plan to have similar silliness at BreastFest Greenville.”

About the Tyanna Foundation

Founded by five sisters, The Tyanna Foundation gets its name from their mother, Tyanna Barre O’Brien, who lost her battle with breast cancer at the age of 48. Since 1999, the 100% volunteer organization has raised more than $1.5 million for hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland; Athens, Georgia; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Haddon Township, New Jersey. Money in each city stays local – helping to make breast cancer more comfortable for patients and less prevalent on the planet.
