The idiom ‘black and blue’ often infers bruising, either emotional orphysical, and in fashion were once two colors never paired togetherunder any circumstance.  Since 2012 however, that has all changed.

Black and blue has been featured on runways, in designer collections andstreet styles regularly over the last two years and is now consideredone of the most sophisticated color palettes.  Take a chance to breakthe fashion rules of the past and embrace the possibility of lookingchic, not defeated, in black and blue.  Here are some great pieces andinspiration ideas you may already have hanging in your closet.

1.    Shirt.  Navy is one of the most universally flattering colors, but oddly one of thehardest to find.  Whether you choose a solid, stripe or print when yousee a blue shirt, pick it up, try it on and take it home.  It willquickly become an indispensible item in your wardrobe.

2.    Pants.  Every wardrobe should have at least one pair of blue pants for eachseason.  Just like your jeans, blue pants work great with just about any colored top and add a level of sophisticated elegance where dark-washed denim adds comfort and casual elegance.

3.    Turtlenecks.  One of the season’s ‘it’ items, no fall/winter wardrobe will becomplete without a black turtleneck sweater.  Layered under a shirt, blazer or standing alone there are ways everyone can wear this chic, timeless silhouette that is not just for nerds and beatniks any more.

4.    Tights.  What can be more cost effective or simple than pairing a blue dresswith black tights and shoes?  The next time you are looking for a quickwardrobe upgrade try this trick.  Not only will your legs look longerand leaner, you will immediately bring your look current.

5.    Blazers.  I always joke the southern uniform is navy blazer and khaki pants, butthanks to James Bond and Tom Ford navy is moving into the formal weararena.  If a full navy tux is a bit too much for you to pull off, thisseason try pairing your classic black tux pants with a navy velvet ortux blazer.  Trust me the ladies will be impressed.

6.    Overcoats.  An often-underutilized element of your outfit, overcoats are a greatway to make a statement.  Since they are removed once inside a building, and our climate does not call for them frequently some people feel anycoat will do, or simply coordinating it to your outfit is enough.  While both may be true, if you want to really look pulled together opt for an overcoat that really enhances your overall look.

7.    Accessories.  Creating this cutting edge black and blue look can be as easy as adding a black necklace, bracelet or watch to your blue suit or dress.  Anominal investment that packs a major punch.  No one should be afraid to try this option.

Since both colors are fashion staplescreating this look is easy and achievable with items you already own.  All it takes is a fresh perspective and risk to go against the ingrained notion to never pair black and blue together.  Try it and see whatyou’ve been missing.
