Building Stronger Communities: National Night Out in Laurens August 1
July 26, 2023The Laurens Police Department (LPD) is joining forces with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) and the Clinton Police Department (CPD) for National Night Out (NNO) on August 1 from 6-8:00 pm on the square in Laurens.
The three law enforcement agencies of Laurens County are working together to create an unforgettable evening of community bonding and fun!
Celebrated on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out brings together residents, law enforcement, and community organizations to promote safety, unity, and neighborhood engagement.
According to Laurens Police Chief Keith Grounsell, “We are excited about bringing National Night Out to the community of Laurens. When I came on as Chief of Police almost one year ago, one of the major platforms that myself, the mayor, and city administrator agreed upon was to improve community programs and partnerships. Last week, we finished the first LPD Youth Summer Camp, and now we are preparing for National Night Out.”
National Night Out was first introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) as a response to growing crime rates and a lack of community connections. The idea was to encourage residents to take a stand against crime and strengthen relationships with law enforcement agencies, making it an excellent platform for community building.
“We are pleased to partner with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office and the Clinton Police Department for the inaugural NNO in Laurens, said Grounsell. “We have a variety of activities and food available, all for free. This is our way of giving back to the community, expressing our gratitude, and allowing us to mingle with them in a casual setting.”
“We are always looking for opportunities to increase our engagement with members of the community and are very pleased to participate in this event,” said Sheriff Don Reynolds.
“The Clinton Police Department appreciates the efforts of Chief Grounsell to initiate the Laurens National Night Out event and we look forward to participating,” said Clinton Police Chief Sonny Ledda. “Building relationships with those we serve is both a reward and benefit of the job.”
NNO in Laurens will be lively affair, featuring an array of activities for people of all ages. Free food including hamburgers and hotdogs, and drinks will be provided. Various entertainment options are lined up including car show, mini-horses, a helicopter display, DNR fishing simulator, SCHP DUI simulation, face-painting, DJ beats, and more.
