Burnette receives Compleat Award from University of South Carolina School of Law

M. Malissa Burnette has received a Platinum Compleat Lawyer Award, the top honor the University of South Carolina School of Law Alumni Council bestows on fellow alumni.

Created in 1992, the James Petigru Compleat Lawyer Award for Professional Excellence signifies outstanding civic and professional accomplishments. It is limited to nine recipients each year. The selection process includes a nomination, letters of recommendation and review by a five-member panel.

All three founders of Burnette Shutt & McDaniel now have received the prestigious award. Nekki Shutt and Kathleen McDaniel were honored with Silver Awards in 2005 and 2012, respectively. The Platinum Award Burnette received goes to attorneys who have practiced 31 years or longer.

A South Carolina Supreme Court Certified Specialist in Labor and Employment Law for more than 25 years, Burnette represent clients in a variety of complicated employment law cases. This includes civil rights, constitutional rights, discrimination, sexual harassment and more.

She’s litigated high-profile cases that have changed the law, including landmark decisions paving the way for women to attend state-supported military academies and for girls to play contact sports in South Carolina public schools. She and Shutt led the legal team that fought to establish marriage equality in the state.
