Burnette Shutt & McDaniel has been honored nationally for its pro bono work, and four of the firm’s attorneys have received state honors as well.

For the second year in a row, the American Bar Association has recognized the firm as a Pro Bono Leader for its work with the organization’s Free Legal Answers Program. Attorneys at the firm answered 87 questions in 2021. The site is a virtual legal clinic where low-income people can ask questions about a range of civil legal issues.

Sarah J.M. Cox, who also was honored individually as a Pro Bono Leader, led the firm’s efforts.

Also, Cox and partners Nekki Shutt, Kathleen McDaniel and Jack Cohoon were members of the South Carolina Supreme Court’s 2021 Pro Bono Hall of Fame. It’s also the second year in a row the three have received the honor. The award recognizes efforts to provide legal services to people of limited means or to charitable groups at no or reduced fees.

The firm’s pro bono work every year involves a variety of cases, from people with employment law issues to those whose civil rights have been violated. The firm also represents pro bono clients in high-profile federal litigation.
