Burnette Shutt & McDaniel’s pro bono efforts honored with national award

Burnette Shutt & McDaniel is being recognized by the American Bar Association as a 2020 Pro Bono Leader for its efforts in assisting with the ABA’s Free Legal Answers Program.
Few law firms in the country receive the recognition annually – in 2019, it was awarded to only 16.
In addition to the firm’s award, attorney Sarah J.M. Cox was honored individually. She answered more than 300 questions last year through Free Legal Answers. Her practice at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel includes employment law and civil litigation.
Cox’s award continues a long tradition of pro bono work at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel. Firm co-founder Malissa Burnette received the ABA award last year, and she also was honored with the South Carolina Bar Senior Lawyers Division Pro Bono Award.
Across the country, more than 140,000 questions were submitted to Free Legal Answers last year. They covered a variety of civil issues, though 41 percent of the questions involved family and children’s law.
The ABA says its Free Legal Answers program is, in many cases, the only opportunity some people have to get assistance. Some cannot access legal services due to transportation problems, while others can’t find legal providers due to conflicts of interest or income limitations.
