Gift to be used to remodel user spaces in school’s library

Cainhoy Elementary School will receive a $10,365 donation from the family of the late Mary Esther Obremskey on Monday, November 14, 2016. Mrs. Obremskey was a longtime and beloved volunteer at the school.

“Our family is so proud to be a part of this gift, and there is no question my wife would be grateful by what will be accomplished through the generous donations of family and friends worldwide whom also loved her,” said Dr. Michael Obremskey, Mrs. Obremskey’s husband. “I am proud to know that children will continue to benefit from the types of things my wife valued. She dedicated herself to making the lives of children better through education, compassion, and generosity.

For us, it’s not the notoriety of donating money for a worthy cause- it’s knowing this investment will reap untold rewards for generations of students here in the Cainhoy community.”

The Obremskey family’s donation will be used to remodel and redecorate the rear portion of the school’s library. The space will be transformed into a reading nook, a place where science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) oriented activities will occur, as well as a music and art appreciation center.

Mrs. Obremskey was a member of the Daniel Island Golfers for Education program and volunteered in Patricia McKinley’s class. As a member of the program, she served as a reading buddy and study buddy, working with students on early literacy skills. In addition to mentoring and assisting students and teachers, the Daniel Island Golfers for Education donates funds to fill the school’s Tiger Store with toys, clothing, and games. They provide snacks and beverages for the Tiger Café, and donate monies to the school’s K-2 teachers to purchase additional classroom supplies and educational games.

“Mrs. Obremskey’s dedication to our students and her selfless attitude transformed the lives and educational experience of so many in the Cainhoy community,” Cainhoy Elementary Principal Aidra Shaw said. “With her family’s generous donation, her legacy will forever be an important part of Cainhoy Elementary School.”
