CanalSide Features Select Trees for Superior Streetscape

May 29, 2008

COLUMBIA, SC – May 28, 2008 – CanalSide is proud to feature Select Trees for its streetscape tree plantings. Nine different species (totaling 200 trees) will be planted alongside streets and park areas throughout the CanalSide neighborhood, creating a public realm unsurpassed in the Midlands region. Widely known for their attractive appearance, superior growth characteristics and tolerance to drought and disease, Select Trees will provide the neighborhood with a high quality tree, ideally suited for downtown urban environments like CanalSide.

CanalSide will set the standard for large scale urban developments in Columbia stated Dan Doyle, Vice President of Development and CanalSide Project Manager. Select Trees will help us achieve this benchmark by providing sustainable trees for an urban streetscape that will deliver a superior tree canopy and appearance, as well as complement the building architecture. Such features are critical elements in creating a great neighborhood as they provide pedestrians and buildings alike with shade and buffer from vehicular traffic. These are just a few of the many important reasons why people will want to become part of the CanalSide neighborhood and utilize its many civic amenities.

CanalSide residents will get the positive impact of sustainable trees through many years of social, environmental, and economic benefits, says Chris Hughes, Vice President of Select Trees. The trees are unique in that they have been selected and grown with a focus on sustainability in the urban environment – notably long life expectancy and tolerance to stressful urban growing conditions.

Rather than simply breeding trees from seedlings, Select Trees is one of the first nurseries to painstakingly clone oak-tree cultivars from parent trees chosen for sustainability. We’ve been working on this technology for about 15 years, Hughes added. When we first learned of the vision that Beach Development had for CanalSide, we knew everyone wanted immediate impact from the trees along with long term benefits to the neighborhood environment.

Strategic partners on this significant infrastructure project include DesignWorks LC (Landscape Architect); Alliance Consulting Engineers (Civil Engineer); L-J Incorporated (Site Contractor); Shurburtt Contracting (Landscape Contractor); and WP Law (Fountain Contractor). Bank of America is providing construction financing for the project.

CanalSide is a mixed-use development on the banks of the Columbia Canal and Congaree River in downtown Columbia’s Vista district. The neighborhood, developed by Beach CanalSide, LLC, an affiliate of The Beach Company, represents The New Way to Live in Columbia: a city within a city that will include retail, commercial and a wide range of residential offerings, all in a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood environment.
