Cason Development Group has acquired a marque corner at Harden and Devine streets in Columbia’s Five Points.

Cason acquired the property for future redevelopment and is evaluating long-term plans for the 5,200-square-foot property that currently that houses the Men’s Wearhouse at 701 Harden St., the Carolina Barber Shop next door at 2021 Devine St., and Sushi Yoshi, 2019 Devine St.

“We have a long-term outlook on Five Points,” said Taylor Wolfe, a developer with Cason Development Group. “Investing in Five Points is something we want to continue to do, and with the city’s focus and tax credits that are available we believe we have the tools necessary to be a part of that positive shift.”

“We are very excited about the opportunity to transform this iconic corner of Five Points and set a new long-term trajectory for this asset and the rest of Five Points. Five Points appears to be at a critical inflection point and we want to be a part of the solution to create a sustainable urban district for the next 50 years,” said Frank Cason, president of Cason Development Group.

Broker Associate Alex Johnson of NAI Columbia represented Cason Development Group in the purchase of the property.

Harden and Devine streets intersect with Saluda and Santee avenues at angles to create one of two star-shaped, five-point intersections that give the urban village its name. “The fact that it is one of the actual Five Points spurred our interest in the property,” Wolfe said. “I grew up going to Sharpe’s Formal Wear (now the Men’s Wearhouse) and my grandfather began taking me to the Carolina Barbershop when I was a kid. This is an important corner to us and to Columbia,” Cason said.

This is Cason Development Group’s second Five Points acquisition. Cason purchased 732 Saluda Ave., the former home of the Pecknel Music Company, in late 2019 for redevelopment.

In recent years Five Points has been undergoing significant change, including plans to redevelop the former Yesterdays Restaurant & Tavern, which is across Devine Street from the Cason acquisition. Additionally, the Treadwell Development, across from the Food Lion shopping center, is poised to transform the 900 block of Harden Street. And the S.C. Department of Transportation has announced a $4 million project aimed at improving pedestrian walkability and traffic on Harden Street and corresponding intersections.
