CCSD names accomplished leader Sheldon Bloomfield as principal of James B. Edwards Elementary School

Charleston County School District (CCSD) announced the appointment of Sheldon Bloomfield as the next principal of James B. Edwards Elementary School, effective July 1, 2025. A proven leader with a track record of innovation, collaboration, and student-centered leadership, Bloomfield brings more than 25 years of experience in education to this new role.

Bloomfield has most recently served as the Interim Principal at Minnie Hughes Elementary School, where he has championed student growth and led initiatives to enhance school culture and academic achievement. Prior to that, he served as Assistant Principal at Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary School in Mount Pleasant for over seven years. His leadership journey also includes key roles at Mary Ford Elementary School, James Simons Elementary School, and across multiple Charleston-area schools where he made a measurable impact on instructional practices, school safety, and family engagement.

Bloomfield is widely respected for his hands-on leadership style and his commitment to building strong, learning environments. He was honored as CCSD’s Assistant Principal of the Year in 2023 and has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Hirshey Award for Outstanding Graduate Student in Educational Leadership from The Citadel in 2015. His work as a mentor, instructional coach, and advocate for early childhood education has earned him a reputation as a collaborative and forward-thinking administrator.

“Mr. Bloomfield’s experience and student-first mindset make him an exceptional fit for the James B. Edwards community,” said Superintendent of School Anita Huggins. “He brings a deep understanding of instructional leadership and a passion for supporting both students and educators. We look forward to the energy, care, and innovation he will bring to the school.”

Bloomfield holds a Specialist in Education degree in Educational Leadership and a Master’s in Elementary School Administration, both from The Citadel. He is a longtime member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education.
