CCSD partnership with local non-profit brings free school supplies to teachers, students

August 5, 2015

CHARLESTON, SC – No child should go without school supplies. Thanks to a partnership between the Charleston County School District (CCSD) and the Teachers’ Supply Closet (TSC), they won’t have to.

TSC is a local non-profit that has been serving the tri-county area since 2008. They receive generous donations from businesses and individuals and set up a “store” where teachers are able to “shop” for free and provide the needed supplies to their students. This helps ensure that thousands of children at Title 1 schools receive school supplies free of charge.

“The Teachers’ Supply Closet is an invaluable partner and one of the unsung heroes here at Charleston County School District,” said Michele English-Watson, TSC board member and CCSD Executive Director of Federal Programs. “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child go to school with a backpack full of supplies and a smile on their face.”

In 2014 alone, TSC served more than 22,000 students in the Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester 4 school districts.

“Our goal is to ensure that every child has the school supplies they need to be successful in school no matter what their family circumstances,” said Don C. Hall, TSC Executive Director.

This year, eligible teachers from approved schools can begin scheduling shopping appointment online on September 3, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. via the TSC’s web site: www.teacherssupplycloset.org under the “For Teachers” section. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come-first-serve basis and go quickly.

The shopping period for the 2015/2016 school year will kick off on Thursday, September 10, 2015. After that date, there will be 13 additional shopping sessions on the following Tuesdays and Thursdays. The last shopping session this period will take place on Tuesday, October 27, 2015.
