Celebrate world cultures right here at home

February 28, 2022

Upstate International is gearing up for its 10th anniversary celebration of Upstate International Month (UIM) this March. Since its inception in 2013, every month of March has been filled with 100s of internationally-themed public events, including colorful international parties, art receptions, theater performances, film screenings, global education programs, and opportunities to experience exciting culture and culinary creations from around the world.

This thirty-one day March celebration of world cultures begins with “The Ringing of the Bells” at noon on March 1st when bell towers across the region announce the official opening of Upstate International Month. Inspired by Greenville’s sister city, Bergamo, Italy, where bells chime out 100 times to announce the symbolic closing of the gates of that ancient, walled city every evening, the Clemson Carillon students will ring out international anthems at 12pm on March 1, 2022.

Over 60 organizations across the Upstate have partnered with Upstate International to present globally-themed community events such as the German Culture Night at the historic Belton Train Depot, performances at the Peace Center including Il Divo and Arabian Nights, an enriching array of internationally-themed lectures, Holocaust Cattle Car Experience presentation and the Holi Festival of Colors, all of which can be at www.upstateinternational.org.

The signature event for UIM is the inaugural Global Upstate Conference, presented by the World Affairs Council Upstate and hosted at Furman University and at the George Dean Johnson Jr. School of Business and Economics, University of South Carolina Upstate from March 29-31, 2022.  It is an interdisciplinary event bringing scholars and leaders together for discussions about the most pressing issues and opportunities facing the world. https://upstateinternational.org/global-upstate-conference/
