Celebrity dancers announced for 8th Annual “Lowcountry Dancing with the Stars” Oxygen Ball to benefit the American Lung Association

April 4, 2016

Five local celebrities have been named for the 8th Annual “Lowcountry Dancing with the Stars” Oxygen Ball. The Oxygen Ball will be held at the Embassy Suites Charleston Area Convention Center on May 13th. The event raises funds for the American Lung Association in South Carolina to provide lung health programs and advocacy in coastal South Carolina.

The American Lung Association is well-known for smoking cessation and lung disease support groups. In addition to these adult programs, one of the Lung Association’s largest programs in the Lowcountry is a free day-camp for children with asthma and their parents called Camp Breathe Easy. Asthma affects more than seven million children nationwide. It is the number one cause for school absenteeism and childhood hospitalization in South Carolina. More than 100 campers were accepted to this year’s camp held on March 19th at Meeting Street Academy. Campers learned ways to better manage their disease, while also participating in interactive sessions with the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry and the Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department. Funds raised at the Oxygen Ball are vital to the success of Camp Breathe Easy and other community lung health programs.

This year’s Celebrity Dancers are Kathy Richter Downey, Co-Owner and CEO of The McKee’s at 139B; Dwayne M. Green, Green Law Offices; Len Hutchison IV, Wells Fargo Advisors; Katie Madison Myers, Kate Madison Fitness; and Mary Ann Stisher, Orangetheory Fitness.

The celebrities will be paired with professional dancers from the Fred Astaire Dance Studios for a competition in which guests will vote for their favorite performance. Those who cannot make it to the event can place unlimited votes online in increments of $10 donations. Guests will enjoy a gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, and performances from alumni dancers including Shelley Hochman, Gretchen Penney and Laura Zucker. Alumni Dancer Elizabeth Colbert-Busch will serve as the emcee for the evening.

About the American Lung Association in South Carolina

The American Lung Association was established nationally in 1904 and is the only remaining voluntary health agency in the community whose sole purpose is the prevention and control of lung disease. In the early years, the organization’s primary mission was to stamp out a single disease, tuberculosis. As tuberculosis became less of a threat to public health, the agency expanded its scope to include all lung diseases. Today our mission is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Our vision is a world free from lung disease. Our motto is Fighting for Air.

The American Lung Association in South Carolina serves local communities in a variety of facets. The organization funds vital research for the discovery and complete understanding of cures for lung diseases. The organization also helps provide access to education and support programs for both adults and children, while also advocating for stronger air laws and tobacco prevention and education at the capital.
