Central Carolina Community Foundation distributes $7.2 million in grants and scholarships during first half of fiscal year

Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Midlands’ local center for philanthropy, and its donors are pleased to announce that during the first half of the 2020-2021 fiscal year (July 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020), more than $7.2 million was awarded in grants and scholarships.

The awarded amount, totaling $7,246,509.33, represents 1,175 grants and scholarships impacting a variety of causes across the region and state. Some grants are awarded at the discretion of Central Carolina Community Foundation’s Community Impact Committee, while others are awarded based on donor recommendations. All grants and scholarships are approved by the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

“These grants and scholarships represent the Community Foundation’s continued efforts to meet the substantial needs of nonprofit organizations throughout the state,” states JoAnn Turnquist, president & CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation. “The grants awarded will provide much-needed funding to organizations vital to our community’s wellbeing.”

The types of organizations most commonly funded during the first two quarters included education and scholarships, human services, faith-based, community improvement, hurricane relief, COVID-19 relief and arts and culture. The grants bring the Foundation’s lifetime grantmaking total to more than $205 million.

The grants include $719,3489 that was distributed by the One SC Fund for hurricane and COVID-19 disaster relief. Also included in the grant distribution is $624,282 that was awarded from the Lynches River Conservation Fund to improve water quality and ecological integrity of the Lynches River watershed.

More than $500,000 in scholarships were also included in the total amount awarded, providing financial assistance to over 200 of South Carolina’s and the country’s outstanding students, including 117 first-generation college students, for the 2020-2021 school year. Scholarship applications for the 2020-2021 school year are currently open through March 5, 2020.
