CHAPIN, SC – Chapin High School senior Elizabeth Hancock, the daughter of Joanne and Jimmy Hancock, was named the 2014 Chapin Community of Character Scholarship Award recipient at the school’s annual awards ceremony held at Chapin Town Hall Monday evening.

The Community of Character Scholarship Award was established to promote and encourage the development of good character in the Town of Chapin and especially among Chapin area students. “Character plays a distinctive role throughout the course of our lives – whether it’s in the classroom, in the workforce or as an active citizen in our community, it is vital we foster a sense of caring, cooperation, courage, initiative, integrity, patience, perseverance, resourcefulness and responsibility among those we come in contact with each day,” said Town Council member Gregg White who presented Hancock with her award.

Miss Hancock has demonstrated leadership in the classroom and beyond, having been active in a number of volunteer efforts, including GOoDWOrks, PETS, Inc, Safe House Outreach, and Hospitality House as well as a serving as tutor for local children at the HUB. She’s been active in her school through Junior Civitans, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Spanish Honor Society and Beta Club. And she’s participated on mission trips to Nicaragua for the past three years, served as a Church Youth Leader and participated in an anti-bullying club called Students Loving Students.

She plans to pursue a career as a teacher because she says she understands the unique role educators have in shaping the lives of the students they serve. She will attend the University of South Carolina’s Honors College in the fall, studying early childhood education.
