Charleston Animal Society Holding Campaign to Ease Critical Overcrowding

June 18, 2014

N. CHARLESTON, SC – With nearly 800 animals in its system, Charleston Animal Society is critically overloaded.  In an attempt to alleviate this predicament, the organization is holding a special adoption campaign with the support of Hendrick Charleston and PetSmart Charities.  Starting today, all adoptions on adult dogs and cats at Charleston Animal Society’s animal care campus at 2455 Remount Rd. in North Charleston are free.   During the campaign, kittens are also available at a special, “adopt one, get one free” discount.    The kitten special is being offered at both the shelter in North Charleston and at PetSmart Mt. Pleasant, located at 676 Longpoint Rd.

“This is the time of year when we traditionally experience the greatest influx of animals into our care, especially kittens,” explains Joe Elmore, Chief Executive Officer of Charleston Animal Society. “We are asking the public to rally behind the community’s most vulnerable animals and come out to this important lifesaving event.  All of these are local animals.  We do not import animals from other communities.  Please adopt local.”

“Because we never turn local animals away, we wind up with over 90% of the Charleston Community’s homeless and abandoned animals,” Elmore says.  “As part of our commitment to sustaining Charleston’s status as the first No Kill Community in the Deep South, we will do whatever we can to make sure that all healthy, treatable animals find a loving home.  That includes animals that other organizations may not consider ‘desirable.’

“We are so thankful that we have wonderful community and corporate partners such as Hendrick Charleston and PetSmart Charities that are willing to support us in times of extreme need,” adds Elmore.  “Their support provides such a tremendous boost to Charleston Animal Society as it attempts to find loving homes for our animals as well as create desperately needed space in our system.”

All animals available for adoption through Charleston Animal Society come spayed or neutered, are vaccinated, microchipped, and are eligible for a free health exam from most local veterinarians.

Adoption event hours for both the shelter and PetSmart Mt. Pleasant are:

-Tuesday, June 17th – Friday, June 20th – 12:00PM – 5:00PM

-Saturday, June 21st and Sunday June 22nd – 10:00AM – 5:00PM
