Charleston Attorney Honored with Statewide Award

CHARLESTON, SC – January 14, 2013 – The South Carolina Bar Foundation announces Nexsen Pruet’s Harold W. Jacobs as the 2012 DuRantDistinguished Public Service Award recipient for meritorious service tothe law and community. This annual recognition is the most prestigiousstatewide award members of the South Carolina Bar can bestow on a fellowattorney. The award will be presented during the Bar Convention on Jan.25 at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

Jacobs is senior counsel at Nexsen Pruet with a practice primarily inlitigation emphasizing the areas of aviation, products liability,antitrust and unfair trade practices. After earning his undergraduatedegree from Clemson University and graduating from the United StatesNaval Academy, Jacobs completed his Juris Doctor at theUniversity of South Carolina School of Law. The School of Law AlumniFoundation later honored him with the Compleat Lawyer Platinum Award,which is given to only three attorneys per section each year foroutstanding professional and civic achievement.

Jacobs is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and participates asa member of the American Bar Association. Celebrated with multiplelistings in Best Lawyers in America, Jacobs has also heldleadership positions including president of the South Carolina Bar andSouth Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association, member of theAmerican Judicature Society board of directors, chair of the SouthCarolina Supreme Court Commission on Character and Fitness and chair ofthe South Carolina Judicial Conference Committee on Judicial Reform.

In his community, Jacobs has served as senior warden on the vestry ofSt. Michael’s and All Angel’s Episcopal Church as well as a member ofthe South Carolina Higher Education Commission and Patriots’ PointAuthority Commission.

About the DuRant Award

Selection criteria include meritorious service to the law and thecommunity. Established in 1980 to honor living members of the SouthCarolina Bar, the DuRant Award recipient is nominated and selected byhis or her professional peers. The Foundation established the award inmemory of Charlton DuRant, a well-known Manning attorney who served asstate senator and special associate justice of the S.C. Supreme Court.

The South Carolina Bar Foundation, the Heart of the Bar, funds theadvancement of justice by improving access, education andaccountability.  Since 1987, the Foundation has allocated approximately$43.8 million to various legal-related organizations that work on behalfof the justice community.
