Charleston County project team to deliver quarterly update on Fort Johnson Road intersection improvements
September 28, 2026The Fort Johnson Road intersection improvements project team will deliver a quarterly construction progress update on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at James Island Town Hall, located at 1122 Dills Bluff Road.
During the meeting, the project team will provide updates on milestones achieved, work underway, and next steps in construction. Following their presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to speak with the project team directly.
Funded by the 2016 Transportation Sales Tax referendum, this pair of intersection improvements is designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
Project Details:
The Fort Johnson Road at Secessionville Road intersection is being upgraded to a signalized intersection with crosswalks, pedestrian refuge areas, pedestrian signals, and dedicated turn lanes to streamline traffic and improve safety.
- Curb and gutter structures have been poured, and all utility relocation work has been completed. Traffic signal installation is expected to begin in October.
The Fort Johnson Road at Camp Road intersection is being reconfigured into a traversable urban compact roundabout, which is designed to safely and efficiently manage mixed traffic types. The project also includes enhanced pedestrian infrastructure, including sidewalks, ramps, crosswalks refuge areas, and more.
- The roundabout at Fort Johnson Road and Camp Road has been completed, along with all drainage improvements and utility relocations. Installation of associated signage is underway.
The project team will host quarterly public meetings to deliver status updates and answer questions throughout the duration of construction, which is expected to continue until June 2027.
